Behind the Mesh with Platinum Prints

What happens when a sprint car driver swaps the pit lane for the print shop? You get Jock Goodyer—speed junkie, graphic enthusiast, and the hands-on owner of Platinum Prints. His story doesn’t begin in a studio surrounded by inks and squeegees, but on the racetrack, chasing down laps and launching merchandise for his own team. Fueled by a desire to take creative control (and maybe save a buck), Jock dove headfirst into screen printing—no formal training, just guts, grit, and a little dog named Blaze along for the ride.

From the outside, printing might look like a clean-cut process—but for Jock, it’s been a high-octane journey filled with trial, error, and late-night experiments. Thanks to a chance mentorship with George from Phantom Printing, he quickly went from rookie to respected shop owner. Now, Jock channels that same drive from the track into his prints—especially his proudest work: his own racewear line, worn by fans across the country.

Describe your screen printing journey. How and when did you get started and what has been your biggest learning experience?

My screen printing journey started in 2022. I had no idea what I was getting in to, I always had a like for graphics but wanted something that was going to suit me. I always paid people to do my merchandise. Until I had the idea to do it myself and make a business out of it. At first I thought it would be easy, I was wrong lol. Thankfully I came in to contact with George from Phantom Printing and he took me in and taught me a lot in a week. From there to now I have just worked on stuff always testing and finding better ways to do stuff. But definitely can’t say enough about George and Caden they got me to where I am today.

Industry

What are your thoughts on the current trends in screen printing? Do you see any emerging styles or techniques that excite you?

I’m happy with he set up I currently run. I love plastisol inks, it just works so well for my print shop and jobs we produce.

What role does the online community play in your screen printing practice? How do you connect with other printers and share knowledge?

Social media being the main one. I’m always checking out photos or videos to see how others are doing it. I’ve contacted some people to ask for help and some are happy to share their knowledge.

Shop Floor

What is your most treasured product or piece of equipment on the floor that has made your life easier as a printer? Why?

I think the most imported bit of equipment I have is a M&R I-Image. It speeds up the screen making process and takes the hassle out of storing film.

What is on your wish list for your shop floor this year?

Hands down a Uni Coat by M&R. Would make the screen coating side run so much smoother and achieve consistent coats

Advice

What advice would you give to aspiring screen printers? What are the essential skills and qualities for success in this field?

My advice to anyone wanting to get in to screen printing would be – do it. Ask questions, test products and techniques. Work hard and put in the hours to achieve a product you know you would be happy to wear.
